Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has inaugurated Prison Management Information System in the provincial capital.

The system, called PIMS, will enable digital monitoring of prisoners, staff and other matters of prisons. While the system has been launched in seven prisons of Punjab, CM Buzdar also approved establishment of PCOs in all the provincial prisons.

The CM directed to complete necessary action for amendments in jail manual and prison act and also approved to set up PCOs in all the jails of the province. The meeting decided to take steps for increasing the capacity of Punjab jails to accommodate ten thousand more prisoners.

He gave in-principle approval to post up-gradation of jail staff, laundry system besides establishing new washrooms in jails. It was also decided to increase the strength of doctors and paramedics according to the need besides establishing a development directorate for the prisons department.

Some of the distinguished features of PMIS include a comprehensive online database of over 3000 prisoners by employing an automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS), planning and execution of steps taken in lieu of reforms, and the facilitation of the public via fast-track registration of interviews.

It will also keep track of the stock and inventory management including management and automation of the grain godowns, medicine and misc. stores, and automation of budgeting, financial transactions, and procurement processes.

Furthermore, PMIS is integrated with the MIS of Home Department, Lahore High Court, Punjab Police, and Anti-Corruption dept.
