ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Railways has decided to shut down the operations of Shalimar Express between Lahore and Karachi from July 15 to cut down costs.
According to the details, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in which it was decided to close Shalimar Express to reduce expenses.
It was decided that the Shalimar Express train from Karachi to Lahore and Faisalabad would be closed from July 15. Sources in the railway department said that the Mohenjo-daro train on Karachi-Sehwan Sharif section ML-2 will be restored instead of Shalimar.
It may be recalled that Shalimar Express used to reach Karachi in the morning from Lahore via Faisalabad, Multan, Lodhran, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Nawabshah and Hyderabad.

The railway administration has prepared a report for the closure of the Shalimar Express train. The closure of the Shalimar Express from Karachi to Lahore has caused a wave of concern among the business community and passengers.
It should be noted that Shalimar Express was also handed over to the private sector for a few years and this train has been operating under the management of two different private companies.
A National Assembly standing committee was recently told that there have been 384 train accidents in Pakistan since 2014: 74 in 2018-19, 67 in 2017-18, 78 in 2016-17, 76 in 2015-16, and 89 accidents in 2014-15. The Pakistan Railways have also seen decades of decline due to corruption, mismanagement and lack of investment.
