Record cold in US Northwest causes travel disruptions, forces some in to shelters

Dec 28, 2021: Across the western states of Washington and Oregon, authorities and private groups have opened emergency shelters for people seeking refuge, as predictors say the Arctic eruption could last until the weekend.
Snow fell in the northwestern Pacific Ocean off the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday, dropping six inches across Seattle and disrupting traffic in large areas of Seattle and Portland. The National Weather Service said Seattle had a low of -6.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday, breaking the 1948 mark. Bellingham, Washington – was 12.8 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees colder than the previous record set in 1971.
State officials in Oregon have declared a state of emergency. In Multonama County – Portland’s home – about half a dozen seasonal shelters were open. Seattle city leaders also opened at least six severe weather shelters and the mayor declared a state of emergency. Utilities reported about 5,000 consumers without electricity Monday in western Washington and Oregon.
Earlier this month, severe, unusual weather in the central United States triggered deadly tonadoes that killed dozens. Last year, unusually cold weather swept across Central America, killing at least 20 people and cutting off power in millions of homes.
Further south, snowfall in the mountains of Northern California and Nevada closed major highways, with forecasters warning that it could be difficult to travel for several days in Sierra Nevada.
More than 93,000 people were without power in northern and central California on Tuesday, according to PowerOutage.us. At Sierra Donner Pass, officials at the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley said the recent snowfall had broken the December record for the largest snowfall of 4.6 meters (15 feet), which was established in 1970. ۔ The record is now 4.9 meters (16 feet). And more snow is expected.
In Nevada, freezing air and blinding snow blasted across the northern part of the state, affecting travel and business, closing Sierra Nevada highway passes, delaying airport flights and shutting state offices.
The storms that have been pummeling California and Nevada in recent days brought rain and snow to Arizona. A record inch of rain in one day was reported at the airport in Phoenix on Friday when 11 inches of snow fell at the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort.
More storms were expected to hit the desert state and continue throughout the week, and snow was again expected in the greater Portland area through Tuesday.
