RAKHINE: Bodies of twenty-three Rohingyas fleeing from Myanmar’s state of Rakhine have reportedly been recovered after their boat sank, with many still missing.

According to a BBC report, authorities have managed to recover the bodies of twenty-three, with thirty others still missing as the boat capsized before it reached Malaysia. On the other hand, eight survivors have been confirmed.

The survivors have informed authorities they were fleeing to Malaysia when their boat carrying over fifty passengers sank and was abandoned by the crew on Sunday.

It is worth mentioning, thousands of Rohingyas attempt similar journeys to Malaysia and Indonesia in hopes to escape “persecution” in Myanmar or the “overcrowded refugee camps” in Bangladesh. Of those that lost their lives in the accident are thirteen women and ten men, reportedly all Muslims, according to a rescue team.

An ethnic minority in Buddhist Myanmar, the Muslim Rohingya community, fled in large numbers to Bangladesh in 2017, primarily to escape “possible genocide” at the hands of the Burmese military, as described by the UN. Those few that remained, have also been trying to flee since the country’s military coup in 2021, when Aung San Suu Kyi’s government was overthrown.

Speaking with the media, survivors recalled being struck by a large wave near Rakhine’s capital, Sittwe. According to them, the smugglers who had been paid approximately $4,000 (£3,153) per person for the journey to Malaysia, abandoned them once the boat started sinking.

Despite the risks that come with such perilous journeys, many Rohingyas choose to cross the Andaman Sea in overcrowded boats during the months of October and May to escape the “unrelentingly grim conditions” in which they are forced to live, according to a BBC report.
