July, 9 2021: The Russian-led CSTO military bloc said on Thursday it was ready to mobilize its full potential if the situation on the Tajik border with Afghanistan deteriorated, as a Taliban delegation in Moscow told Russia.

Foreign forces, including the United States, are retreating after nearly 20 years of fighting, forcing the Taliban to seek fresh territory in Afghanistan. As a result, hundreds of Afghan security personnel and refugees were forced to flee across the border to neighboring Tajikistan, raising fears in Moscow and other capitals that Islamist extremists could infiltrate Central Asia.

Russia’s six-nation Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), CSTO, said on Thursday it was ready to use all its resources if necessary, Interfax News Agency reported.

The U.S. exit from Afghanistan is a headache for Moscow which fears spiralling fighting may push refugees into Central Asia, create a jihadist threat and even stir civil war in one ex-Soviet state, a former Russian diplomat and two analysts have told Reuters.
Russia is running its largest foreign military base in Tajikistan near the Afghan border, and Moscow has already promised to help Dushanbe if needed. Interfax quoted the CSTO as saying that there was no need for troops from other member countries in the region. The CSTO’s statement came as a Taliban delegation in Moscow spoke to Russian officials and tried to reassure their hosts that the group would not invade the Tajik border or that it would do so in the future. Will not use Afghanistan as a platform to attack Russia.
Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that it had told the Taliban delegation that it was concerned about escalating tensions in northern Afghanistan and did not want fighting in any other country.

The ministry said it had received assurances from the Taliban that the group would not violate other countries’ borders in the region, and that the Taliban had guaranteed the security of foreign diplomatic missions inside Afghanistan.

Citing the Taliban, he said he wanted a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan and promised to respect human rights, including women’s, “within the framework of Islamic principles and Afghan traditions.” It said the Taliban also promised to fight the threat posed to the Islamic State in Afghanistan and to eradicate drug production.
