Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow is working toward a “peaceful settlement” of the Ukraine conflict and has shared details of its proposals with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement was made on Friday morning in a joint statement issued from Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
Putin stated that Russia intends to keep diplomatic channels open for ending the war and, as part of that effort, briefed New Delhi on Moscow’s latest framework for a possible settlement. According to him, India’s global standing and responsible role in international affairs make it a key partner in discussions related to regional peace and stability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, responding to the Russian position, said India supports every initiative that leads to the protection of human lives and the restoration of peace. He reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy—not force—remain the only viable path to resolving global conflicts.
The development comes amid Russia’s recent discussions with U.S. envoys regarding potential steps toward a negotiated end to the war. Moscow, however, has expressed reservations about certain elements of the U.S. proposals, saying they “do not fully align” with Russia’s security concerns. Western capitals have also signaled caution, insisting that any plan must be assessed in light of international norms and the realities on the ground.
During the Modi-Putin meeting, issues of defense cooperation, bilateral trade, and strategic partnership were also discussed, but the Ukraine conflict remained the central focus of the talks.
Both leaders emphasized that although achieving lasting peace is challenging, diplomatic efforts must continue and all possible avenues for de-escalation should remain open.
