Russian warships are heading towards the Black sea for naval drills

Feb 8, 2022: According to a report by Reuters, Six Russian warships are heading from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea for naval exercises, the Interfax news agency quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying, adding that it was a pre-planned movement of military resources.

Russia announced last month that its navy would conduct an extensive set of exercises involving all its fleets in January and February, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.

Turkish sources said that six ships will pass through Turkey’s straits to the Black Sea on Tuesday and Wednesday. The ships, which include Korolev, Minsk and Kaliningrad, are set to sail to the Bosphorus on Tuesday, while Piotr Morganov, Georgi Pobidonosets and Oleinigorsky Gorniak are expected to pass by on Wednesday.

Russia has amassed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. It denies any plot to attack but is seeking major security guarantees, including a promise to deploy missiles near its borders, to withdraw NATO military infrastructure and to ban Ukraine from joining the alliance.

Legally, NATO member Turkey could close the Strait of Transit if Russia takes military action against Ukraine.

Turkey, which shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea, has said any military conflict would be unacceptable and has told Moscow any invasion would be unwise.

However, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also offered to mediate in the dispute between Moscow and Kyiv. Ankara has cordial relations with both countries, though Erdogan says it will do what is necessary as a NATO member in the event of a Russian invasion.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday said that the Ukraine crisis might take months to resolve. He was speaking after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv a day after holding talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
