
Feb 18, 2022: A senior producer of a private news channel Samaa TV, Athar Mateen was killed in broad daylight by armed men on a motorcycle in Karachi’s North Nazimabad.
The incident took place in Nazimabad area of Karachi where producer Athar Mateen was shot dead. Police reached the spot, police said. The incident took place on the main highway of Nazimabad. Athar Mateen hit the motorcycle to save the citizen while the armed accused riding on the motorcycle were looting. Athar Matin, who was riding in the car, died on the spot after being shot. The accused fled the scene.
Athar Mateen Ahmed has been killed by armed men in the North Nazimabad area when he was returning home after dropping his children at school. Initial reports suggested the armed men were said to be dacoits who have killed Athar Mateen for resisting a robbery.
Police have claimed that according to the preliminary investigation, the incident was resistance to robbery. According to the police, journalist Athar Mateen was returning home after dropping off the children. A 30-bore pistol shell was found at the scene. Athar Mateen was associated with private TV SAMAA and was working as a producer while he was the brother of renowned newscaster and anchor Tariq Mateen.
The killing has been condemned in political circles across the country. PPP Azad Kashmir Information Secretary Zobia Khurshid Raja said that senior producer of Samaa TV Athar Mateen was martyred by dacoits. The accused were robbing a man in North Nazimabad when Athar hit him with his car and tried hard to save the citizen.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident of murder of a journalist. Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has expressed regret over the killing of a journalist in Karachi. Sheikh Rashid has demanded a report of the incident from the Chief Secretary and IG Sindh.
Special Assistant Chief Minister Punjab Hassan Khawar has condemned the murder of Athar Mateen, senior producer of SAMAA News in Karachi. Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Bazdar has expressed sorrow over the death of Athar Mateen.
Senator Faisal Javed Khan said that he was deeply saddened to hear the news of the murder of Athar Matin, brother of anchor Tariq Matin and senior producer of Samaa TV.
The government should immediately arrest the killers and punish them, he added.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail has strongly condemned the killing of senior journalist Athar Mateen in a firing incident in Karachi and directed Additional IG Karachi to take immediate action to arrest the accused and to ensure protection of life, property and honor. The Sindh government should take practical steps to eradicate lawlessness.
