Saudi Arabia arrests more than 200 in anti-corruption purge

Lahore, 10th August: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has arrested more than 200 employees in the latest anti-corruption purge.

According to details from Dawn News, Saudi Arabia announced the arrest of 207 employees and a dozen government ministries in the latest anti-corruption case discovered by a body empowered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

According to details from Al Jazeera, the kingdom’s National Anti-Corruption Commission which is known as “Nazaha”, announced the arrests late on Monday. It said that people who were detained were not named and it was unclear when the arrests were made.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission has reported that more than 460 people are being interrogated under the latest allegations. And 207 Saudi citizens and residents have been detained on allegations of corruption, fraud and abuse of power.

The Commission added that those who are accused will be referred to prosecution. They hail from the national guard and a range of ministries, including defense, interior, health and justice, among others.

Earlier, in April, the Commission reported that 176 people from the public sector had been detained in the same manner for alleged corruption.

Meanwhile, Saudi nationals have been long complaining of uncontrolled corruption in government and also of public funds being misused by the people in power.

As per previous reports, the anti-corruption purge by the Crown Prince began in late 2017, which had helped him consolidate power and helped the Kingdom in gaining $106 billion in assets.

According to reports, in late 2017 Prince Mohammed targeted more than 300 princes, public figures and businessmen who symbolized the elite structure encircling the ruling Al Saud family and their network.

That year Crown Prince’s forces arrested the most powerful figures of the country and held them isolated at the famous Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh for months. Several were later transferred to prisons or other detention centers amid reports of physical abuse.

Similarly, last year two high-ranking officials were removed from their posts and referred to trial.
