U.S President Joe Biden leaves for Europe on a mission to bolster Western unity

Mar 10, 2022: Saudi and Emirati leaders have refused to discuss the Ukraine crisis with U.S President Biden.

The White House unsuccessfully tried to arrange calls between President Biden and the de facto leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as the U.S. was working to build international support for Ukraine and contain a surge in oil prices said Middle East and U.S. officials.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the White House tried unsuccessfully to talk to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Both leaders refrained from speaking to Biden.

According to the U.S newspaper, Biden wanted to talk to the two leaders about gaining international support for Ukraine and stopping the rise in oil prices. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed did not accept the White House’s request to speak to the U.S President.

According to a U.S official, the two countries are unhappy with US policies towards the Middle East, and Saudi Arabia is unhappy with Iran’s nuclear program and the impending agreement on it.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia is also urging Muhammad bin Salman to grant legal immunity in the case of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashkiji. Some countries have shown neutrality on this issue.

The United States has banned Russian oil exports and is looking to Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia to address the oil shortage.

Biden is asking for a boost in oil production in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine crisis and his decision today to cut off all Russian oil imports into the U.S. The price of Brent crude had already spiked to $132 on Tuesday in anticipation of Biden’s announcement.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have made it clear that they will not increase production beyond the amount set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) unless the United States supports them on the Yemen issue.
