Saudi-led coalition launches "large-scale" assault on Yemen

Dec 26, 2021: The Saudi-led coalition launched a “large scale” attack on Yemen on Saturday when a missile killed two people in the kingdom, the first such killing in three years blamed on Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

Yemeni medical experts say a coalition airstrike on Yemen has killed three people and wounded six others in the town of Ajama, northwest of the Houthi-held capital Sanaa.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014, with the internationally recognized government backed by a Saudi-led military coalition against the Houthis, who occupy much of the north. Tens of thousands have been killed since then, with the United Nations calling it the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The Saudi civil defense says a missile strike on the southern region of Jazan, bordering Yemen, has killed two people and injured one Saudi and another Yemeni citizen and wounded seven others.

“A military projectile fell on a commercial store on the main street, resulting in two deaths,” it said in a statement, adding six Saudis and a Bangladeshi national were wounded.

The Saudi-led military coalition said shortly afterwards that it was “preparing for a large-scale military operation”.

It responded later with an air strike in which “three civilians including a child and a woman were killed, and six others were wounded”, the Yemeni medics told AFP.

The coalition said it would hold a news conference later on Saturday to address the latest developments.

Yemen’s Houthi neighbor regularly fires missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia, targeting its airports and oil infrastructure. But the latest incident was the first in more than three years to cause casualties in the kingdom, which recorded its first death from a Houthi missile strike in 2018 when a missile landed on Riyadh. It also comes at a time when fighting between the two sides is intensifying, with the coalition launching airstrikes on Sanaa.
