Senate Elections

I think this whole piece of proportional representation, secret ballot, show of hands for Senate elections is totally effed up.

So here’s what proportional representation means.

If a party has “x” number of seats in the electoral college, which comprise both the National and Provincial Assemblies then it automatically gets “y” number of Senate seats.

Now the weightage of each electoral college vote is weighted up or down to reflect parity given that some provincial assemblies like Baluchistan have less members than say Punjab which has considerably more.

In simple terms it means a single Punjab MPA vote has 25% weight age as compared to a single Baluchistan MPA vote, to reflect the low number of Baluchistan Assembly Members and the larger number of Punjab Assembly Members and therefore create parity.

But what then is really strange that their should then ALSO BE SECRET VOTING WHEN THE CONSTITUTION MANDATES THAT SENATE SEATS WILL GO TO PARTIES BASED ON THE NUMBER OF SEATS THEY HAVE IN THE NATIONAL AND PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLIES, APPROPRIATELY WEIGHTED!!!!.

This is exactly the same principle which is applied to women seats, where parties get seats, proportionately based on their NA and PA seats and people are elected based on the party’s list of nominees.

Therefore, the Senate Election should really be a simple exercise of parties getting a certain number of seats, again proportionately, based on their votes in the electoral college and the names on their nominee lists.

I think the Supreme Court must clarify this totally effed up clause of Proportional Representation for Senate and throw out this whole “Secret Ballot” or even open show of hands, nonsense and have party nominated names be elected on the basis of proportional representation!

The current Senate election system is totally effed up!

And that’s why I say. We need a complete Ctr+Alt+Delete reset of our entire system.
