ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Communications was held at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Hidayatullah.
The committee was briefed on traffic flow and M-tag system on M-1, M-2, M-9 motorways. The Senate Standing Committee on Planning referred the issue to the Senate Standing Committee on Communications. The committee was told that the introduction of the M-tag system would avoid long queues at toll plazas, he said that the process of access to this system should be made easier for the people.
The committee meeting was attended by Senator Lt Gen (retd) Salahuddin Tirmidhi, Senator Agha Shahzeb Durrani, Senator Ashok Kumar, Senator Yousuf Badini, Senator Jahanzeb Jamal Dini, Secretary Communications and Chairman NHA besides senior officials of the ministry and relevant agencies.
Referring to the Dir-Chitral Motorway during the meeting, the chairman of the committee said that the provincial government had announced this important highway a few days ago and it would definitely provide convenience to the people of the area. If it is being brought under the supervision of Highway Authority, then Bajaur should also be included in it which will provide another option for access to Dir Chitral and will reduce the burden on the system.
He said that the Ministry of Communications is seriously considering this aspect. The committee decided that at the next meeting, the Secretary Planning and Development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be summoned so that all aspects related to the project could be carefully considered and recommendations could be made keeping in view the public convenience.
A detailed briefing was given on N 95 Shikarpur to Rajanpur, Rajanpur to DG Khan and DG Khan to DI Khan sections and it was informed that progress is being made on 1265 km long highway. Senator Salahuddin Tirmidhi took up the issue of delay in payments despite acquisition of land for construction of Kagan Tababu Sir Top Street. The committee recommended to ensure payment to the land owners as per the directions of the Supreme Court.Assuring in this regard, he sought respite till the next meeting.
