LAHORE: An 80-year-old senior citizen of Pakistan, Muhammad Nazir, was released from India and handed over to his family in Lahore. Spending many years in the Indian prison has badly affected Muhammad Nazir’s mental health, says rescue officials.

Muahmmad Nazir, a resident of Lahore, was released from the Indian captivity on February 17, after eight years. He was arrested by the Indian authorities in 2014. Nazir’s mental health is said to be badly affected for spending all these years in the Indian prison. He is also having hearing problems, said a rescue official.

India had recently repatriated 12 Pakistanis, six fishermen and six civilians, to Pakistani authorities via the Attari-Wagah border after they had completed their sentences.  Nazir had been under the care of Edhi Foundation for two days. Muhammad Nazir’s sons, Malik Abdul Hameed and Malik Muhammad reached Edhi Center in the area of Township to take their father home.

According to Nazir’s sons, their father had left the house in 2014 after having breakfast as usual but did not return. “We searched for him in different places and cities for several months and reported his disappearance to Islampura police. It was as if he had died and we would never see him again,” said one of Nazir’s sons.

However, a few days ago, the police contacted his sons and asked for his father’s details, his identity card and other documents. After a brief confirmation process, the police informed his family that Muhammad Nazir was imprisoned in India and that the respective authorities would send the documents to Pakistan High Commission in Delhi for verfication.
