Feb 22, 2022: According to a report by Reuters, a Russian-backed separatist official in eastern Ukraine accused Ukrainian saboteurs on Tuesday of detonating a mine on a road in the breakaway region that killed three civilians as per reports from the Interfax news agency.

The separatist official did not provide evidence and there was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Kyiv has repeatedly denied similar allegations and accused the separatists and Russia of deliberately circulating fakes.

Earlier, after Russia recognized independence of two breakway regions in eastern Ukraine, President Putin ordered troops into two Russia-backed separatist territories in Ukraine and hinted at the possibility of a wider military campaign and laid claim to all of Ukraine as a country “created by Russia” in an emotional and aggrieved address to the Russian people.

The order was condemned as a violation of international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty by several nations at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council

Ukraine’s president Zelenskyy, in a televised statement, meanwhile urged Ukraine’s allies to take action immediately and called for the Ukrainian people to remain calm.

“We are on our own land,” he said. “We are not afraid of anything or anyone.”

Russia’s move has been condemned by western powers, with British and European Union leaders vowing to impose sanctions on those involved.
