Shah Rukh Khan greets the news of bail for Aryan Khan with “tears of joy”
Oct 29, 2021: Former Indian Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that megastar Shah Rukh Khan received the news of the bail of his son Aryan Khan – who was arrested earlier this month in connection with a drug cruise case – with tears in his eyes.
According to Mr. Rohatgi, the actor had given up his professional activities.
“He’s been very upset for the last three or four days that I’ve been there and I’m not even sure if he’s eaten properly. He was drinking coffee after coffee. And he was very, very upset. And I saw a big sense of relief, on the father’s face the last time I met him, “Mr Rohatgi told India’s NDTV in an exclusive interview.
Aryan Khan’s bail had been denied twice before and 23-year-old Aryan has spent 24 days in jail. Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan did not attend the hearings of the case.
But after his bail was last rejected, Mr Khan visited Aryan on October 21 at Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. Aryan Khan, his friend Arbaaz Merchant and model Manmohan Dhamicha were granted bail by the Bombay High Court last evening. He could be released only after a written order from the High Court tomorrow – allowing him to celebrate Diwali at home. In the case of Aryan Khan, he will also be able to go with his father on his birthday on November 2.
According to legal counsel for Aryan Khan, Rohatgi, the past month has been extremely traumatic for the parents, “Unfortunately, they had lost in the lower court. So it came to the High Court and one month has gone by. And the parents were very, very worried. That is why they were taking a very great interest in the case”.
In the Bombay High Court, Mr Rohatgi had argued that no drugs had been found on Aryan Khan and that the Anti-Narcotics Control Bureau had very weak grounds for arrest. Mr Rohatgi told the court that the NCB case against him was based entirely on two-year-old WhatsApp chats that were “irrelevant” and had nothing to do with the cruise.
Under these circumstances, the arrest was wrong and violated Aryan Khan’s constitutional guarantees.
He also rejected the special court’s argument that Aryan Khan knew about the ‘charas’ hidden in the shoes of his friend Arbaaz Merchant, which amounted to “conscious ownership”. Calling the connection a distant one, Rohatgi said, “There is no question of conscious ownership. Arbaaz is not my servant, he is not in my power.”
