Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party strongly condemn the arrest of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, earlier today.
Shahbaz Sharif, leader of the opposition, said that media is the fourth pillar of the state; fascist rulers are trying to defeat it. The move is calling for revenge, he further stated.
The last attack of a declining government is on the media and political opponents, said the PML-N President. The media has been suppressed for the last eighteen months by the government.
Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s spokesman also condemn the arrest of GEO/Jang Group editor-in-chief Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman. According to Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, we have been pointing to NAB’s vengeful attitude since day one. Imran Khan targets undesirables by using the national accountability bureau (NAB), he said.
Furthermore, the spokesman added that Rehman’s arrest is an attack on the freedom of journalism and Imran Khan wants to crush it by bullying and intimidation. However, Mir Shakeel ur Rehman should be released immediately.
It should be remembered that NAB has arrested Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman over corrupt practices, on Thursday (today). According to reports of Baaghi TV, the media tycoon was arrested in Lahore by the anti-corruption watchdog in a case pertaining to the purchase of a 54-kanal land. He purchased the land in Lahore’s Johar Town area during the tenure of Nawaz Sharif as Punjab chief minister in 1986. The land was reportedly acquired in violation of the rules.
Earlier, Mir Shakeel ur Rehman was interrogated for two hours on March 5 and he appeared for the second time today to answer NAB official’s questions. According to sources, the media house owner was unable to answer the questions on which he was detained.
According to sources, instead of answering questions, Rehman continued to threaten NAB by showing off his power and strength. However, the NAB officials arrested Mir Shakeel after he failed to furnish the evidence.
