The immediate cause was Israel repealing the 2005 Israeli disengagement from the northern occupied West Bank, soon after Benjamin Netanyahu returned to the office of Prime Minister. The Israeli Ambassador to Washington was summoned to express severe displeasure at the step by the U.S.
The repealed law allowed Israeli citizens to commute from Jenin and Nablus, after evacuation by Israeli settlers in 2005. The areas that are the most prone to violence, and this decision will lead to armed confrontations between the settlers and Palestinians. This step holds great implications in the realm of security for the troubled area.

Washington is angry because it was as early as in March 2023 that the present Israeli government, had shown agreement to continue with and uphold the commitment, in Sharm el-Sheikh during a security summit.
State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel has said U.S is in the process of viewing various options to respond to this violation by the Israeli government.
In the backdrop of changing global alliances, the relationship between the inseparable twins does not make sense. Israel is not struggling to survive. That is an outdated narrative that facts do not support. Israel enjoys good relations with Morocco, UAE, Bahrain and Sudan. Qatar has agreed to allow Israel use of its air space. Saudi Arabia has offered conditions to the U.S for normalizing relations with Israel formally. Though both enjoy informal relations. Besides, Israel has in place, peace treaties with Jordan and Egypt. Doha is the seat that Israeli diamond traders use for trade. Turkey has made up with Israel. The question of Palestine has largely been relegated to the sub-text.

In a world of fast changing geopolitical alliances with reconciliation between Saudi Arab and Iran, Saudi Arab normalizing relations with Syria, Chinese Yuan coming up as a strong substitute for swap currency agreements for China, Saudi Arab & Russia- the world is fast resetting its older rules of the power game.
The relationship between Israel & U.S certainly suits Israel, but what about U.S? In the re-emerging situation in Middle East with new alliances in the backdrop, is U.S putting at stake the good will of the Muslim states, particularly the oil-rich countries investing in U.S economy?
U.S and Israel relationships go a long way back. A sharp break will be a betrayal, however, U.S needs to recalibrate its relationship with Israel to look after her own interest in a fast-changing new world order.
