Sialkot incident: Mufti Taqi Usmani remarks 'no justification' #Baaghi

Karachi: Religious cleric Mufti Taqi Usmani has said that there is “no justification” for being the judge, jury, and executioner for matters concerning blasphemy, in the absence of concrete evidence.

According to reports, after religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel, Shaykh-ul-Hadith Mufti Taqi Usmani has also expressed his reaction to the tragic incident that took place in Sialkot, where a Sri Lankan factory manager was brutally lynched and burned by an angry mob over blasphemy accusations.

In this regard, Shaykh-ul-Hadeeth Mufti Taqi Usmani has said that blasphemy is a serious crime but the evidence of committing it needs to be equally strong. Mufti Taqi Usmani believes that there is no justification for punishing anyone by making a serious accusation of blasphemy without evidence. The Sialkot incident has brought the country and the nation disrepute by painting an ugly picture of Muslims in the international community, he added.

Taking to Twitter, the respected scholar wrote, “Blasphemy is a very serious crime, but the evidence against the accused must be just as strong. There is no justification for punishing someone in a barbaric and haraam way by making this serious accusation.”

Yesterday, the renowned scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel also strongly condemned the Sialkot incident and said that the incident of burning a foreigner alive under the guise of honoring the Prophet (S.A.W.) was extremely unfortunate. Maulana Tariq Jameel had said in a statement issued on Twitter that it is against Islamic teachings to take the law into one’s own hands on the basis of a mere accusation.

Moreover, Punjab government spokesman Hassan Khawar said that the case of the Sialkot incident was being looked into by the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Punjab himself. Talking to the media along with IG Punjab Rao Sardar, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Punjab for Information Hassan Khawar said that when the Sialkot incident occurred, the police took necessary action, and a case was registered in the police complaint.

Hassan Khawar said that 118 persons were detained in 200 raids following the Sialkot incident and help was being sought from the footage to identify the culprits. Additionally, footage from 160 cameras has been taken regarding the incident. 

He added that action would be taken against those responsible for the Sialkot incident. The Prime Minister and Chief Minister Punjab formed a committee and IG Punjab also formed a monitoring cell. On the other hand, IG Punjab Rao Sardar while talking to media said that when the incident was reported, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Gujranwala was immediately dispatched.

The IG Punjab said that by the time the police arrived, the death had occurred. RPO Gujranwala went and initiated the arrests after which confessional videos of 13 out of 118 arrested persons also appeared in the media. The accused will be produced in court as soon as possible after completing the investigation.

He added that the police were investigating every aspect of the incident.
