RAWALPINDI: Former Rawalpindi Commissioner Rawalpindi has been arrested as part of a huge anti-corruption investigation in the Rawalpindi Ring Road case.
According to sources, significant progress has been made in the Ring Road case. Today, the anti-corruption team has arrested former commissioner Rawalpindi Captain (retd) Muhammad Mahmood.
Former Commissioner Rawalpindi Capt (retd) Muhammad Mahmood also appeared before the inquiry committee investigating the Rawalpindi Ring Road case where he was questioned. The inquiry team includes legal, technical, and economic experts.
Later, Anti-Corruption also arrested Chairman Land Acquisition Wasim Tabish.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Imran Khan has already ordered a full probe into the Rawalpindi Ring Road project scandal.
It may be recalled that large-scale irregularities were revealed in the Rawalpindi Ring Road Inquiry. It was stated in the inquiry that former Commissioner Muhammad Mahmood made an illegal change in the direction of Ring Road and with the connivance of consultants Muhammad Mahmood, former LAC Wasim Tabish, former officer Abdullah were found involved in irregularities.
Sources said that the three competent officers overstepped their authority and embezzled funds. The irregularities in Ring Road were aimed at benefiting the Rental Syndicate. The three officers also formed their own Rental Syndicate. Under the guise of artificial increase in real estate prices, while the current and former government officials were also involved with the accused.
According to sources, the case has been referred to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for action against the three officers. The NAB will investigate scams worth Rs2.3 billion in the project.
Zulfi Bukhari, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Special Assistant for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, has resigned from his official post after being named in the Ring Road scandal.
Zulfi Bukhari said, “I am stepping down on my own until the investigation into the Ring Road scandal is completed.” He also demanded the setting up of a judicial commission to probe the matter.
Assuring cooperation in the investigation, Zulfi Bukhari said that he was ready for any kind of investigation and would remain in Pakistan and would continue to stand by the ideology and vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
