Lahore: The announcement by Sikh organisations all over the world to start registration for the Khalistan Referendum 2020 from 4th July has created a new problem for India.
Organisations all over the world associated with the movement for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan, especially Sikhs For Justice, have announced the start of the registration for the referendum 2020, from 4th July, while voting will take place in November 2020.
Important Sikh leader associated with the Khalistan movement, and member of British Sikh Council, UK, Sardar Suranjeet Singh Banor told Express that we want Khalistan not by firing shots but by a peaceful political process. For this we want to know the opinion of the Sikhs living the world over, as to whether or not they want a separate Sikh State. For this purpose we had announced the Referendum 2020. Online registration over the world will begin on 4th July, and voting will be conducted in November.
This announcement has increased the worries of the Indian government. During this month, on 6th June, the anniversary of the Indian army’s attack on Shri Akal Takht Sahab, the Jathedar of Shri Akal Takht Sahab, Harpreet Singh Giani said that Khalistan is the dream of every Sikh.
If India gives them Khalistan they will take it. For this statement of his, demands for registering a treason case against him in India and hanging him, have surfaced. The biggest representative organisation of the Sikhs, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is being pressurised by the Indian government to remove Giani Harpreet Singh from his position.
In the same press conference the Pradhan Bhai of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Gobind Singh Longowal, was also present, and he had also supported Giani Harpreet Singh’s statement. Giani Harpreet Singh’s security has been tightened due to the fear of any action against him by the Indian government.
A leader of the Sikhs for Justice movement has informed that the Indian government has written letters to the British and Canadian governments in which they have been told that they should stop the Sikh organisations in their countries from any movement against India. However while dismissing the allegations levelled in these letters, both governments, they said that peaceful protest is the right of the Sikhs.
Sikhs for Justice leaders said that they will raise a voice not just for the Sikhs but for the Kashmiris as well. If Khalistan is formed it will have cordial relations with Pakistan.
