KARACHI, Jul 17 (APP):  Sindh Minister for Energy, Imtiaz A Shaikh has recommended use of locally mined coal only in running the Thar Coal Plant – II, managed by Jamshoro Power Company Ltd (JCPL), with a capacity to generate 660 Megawatts of electricity.

In his latest communication addressed to the Federal Ministry for Power, he submitted that JCPL Plant – II needed to be duly designed and run on Thar Coal only so as to minimize the dependence on imported product and contain unnecessary expenditure.

“We must focus to generate 100% power through our national resources, which in this particular context is the coal that is being extracted from our mines in Thar,” emphasized the provincial minister.

It was claimed that generation of 660 Megawatts of power through local coal would not only save USD 125 million annually in terms of foreign exchange but also help country to produce low cost electricity.

“It would be low cost, more convenient, feasible and in the larger national interest,” reiterated Imtiaz A Shaikh in his letter .

Mentioning that Sindh Government along with Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company are in contact with the power division with regard to propose conversion of JCPL plant – II on Thar Coal, Imtiaz A Shaikh further suggested that Pakistan Railways can be engaged for transportation of the Thar coal from the mines to the plant site.
