LAHORE: In an order issued by the Punjab Government’s Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department, a four-day holiday has been announced to combat a “serious threat” to public health.
According to the directive, the spread of Conjunctivitis, also known as Pink Eye, due to bacterial or viral infection, smoke, dust, or chemical exposure is posing a serious and “imminent threat” to public health in the province forcing the government to take necessary safety measures for prevention and control of the disease in Punjab.

As per the Punjab Infectious Diseases (Prevention and Control) Act, 2020, the Health Department has chosen to implement an “immediate preventive and speedy remedy” to ensure public health is maintained.
In this regard, Ali Jan Khan, Secretary of the Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department of the Punjab Government after approval from the Chief Minister has put in motion Sections 4(c), 5(1)(e), and 5(1)(f) of the Punjab Infectious Diseases (Prevention and Control) Act under which movement will be “restricted” in District Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Kasur, District Gujranwala, District Hafizabad, and District Narowal for having the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) and a potential hotspot for Conjunctivitis because of smog.
The order further read that between 9th to 12th November (Thursday to Sunday) all markets and shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, gymnasiums, private and public schools, and private and public offices will remain closed. Additionally, any movement to and from these places by means of public and private transport will also be limited.

On the other hand, pharmacies and medical stores, hospitals, medical facilities and vaccination centers, petrol pumps, oil depots, tandoors, bakeries, grocery or karyana stores, dairy shops, sweet shops, vegetable and fruit shops, meat shops, e-commerce/postal/courier services and utility services including electricity, natural gas, internet, cellular networks, and telecom services will remain functional.
Furthermore, large department stores will only keep their grocery or pharmacy sections open to public access while all other sections will remain closed till Monday.

The following will be exempted from the orders:
- On-duty officials of govt departments as notified by their respective departments, judges, lawyers, and court staff.
- Healthcare Workers and medical professionals related to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, sample collection points, and medical stores.
- Officials of the law enforcement agencies.
- Personnel related to essential services.
- Persons in need of medical assistance and two attendants (if necessary).
- Persons going grocery shopping or for medicines.
- For necessary/unavoidable religious rites including last rites, Namaz-e-Janaza, burial, or related activities.
- Utility services such as WASA, Municipalities, WAPDA, NTDC, DISCOs, and SNGPL.
- Takeaway or home delivery from restaurants.
- Or an exemption deemed necessary by the Commissioner of the concerned divisions.
