Sonam Kapoor reacts to hijab row on Instagram

Bollywood diva, Sonam Kapoor, weighed in on the ongoing hijab controversy in Karnataka and questioned why wearing turban can be a ‘choice’ but hijab cannot. She shared a post on Instagram stories, featuring a picture collage.

The picture featured a man wearing turban on the left, with the text stating “This can be a choice”. This was juxtaposed with a photo of a woman wearing headscarf and the text below said, “But this can’t?”

The hijab row started earlier this year when six girls came to a government-run college in Udapi wearing headscarves citing their faith, which was met with violent resistance from a section of students, who turned up at the college wearing saffron scarves. The tension escalated as the protests spread to other parts of Karnataka.

As a reaction to the protest, the Karnataka government announced a three day-holiday from Wednesday for high schools and pre-university colleges to avoid any further disturbances and untoward incidents on campuses.

According to the reports, the Karnataka High Court is hearing a petition challenging hijab restrictions in educational institutions. In its interim order, the court stated, “We request the state government and all other stakeholders to reopen the educational institutions and allow the students to return to the classes at the earliest.

Pending consideration of all these petitions, we restrain all the students regardless of their religion or faith from wearing saffron shawls (Bhagwa), scarves, hijab, religious flags or the like within the classroom until further orders.”

In relation to this, several Bollywood celebrities have also expressed their opinions on the ongoing controversy. Javed Akhtar said that although he is not in favour of hijab but condemned “mobs of hooligans who are trying to intimidate a small group of girls.”
