Storm Eunice leaves 200,000 UK homes without power

Feb 20, 2022:

Nearly 200,000 British homes are still without power after Hurricane Eunice left a deadly trail across Europe and disrupted the transport network.

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least 16 kilometers per hour (122 miles per hour) in the United Kingdom, killing at least four people and causing widespread disruption. At least six more deaths were reported in Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The UK Business and Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said power had been restored to 1.2 million households but 190,000 customers remained without supply.

Earlier, the UK’s Energy Networks Association said that at 7:30GMT about 226,000 customers were without power, mostly across southern England but also in the east of the country and southern Wales.

“Strong winds across southern England are impacting restoration efforts,” Kwarteng said. “We expect most customers to have supplies restored promptly,” he added.

Train operators in the UK urged people not to travel, with trees still blocking several lines after most of the network was shut down.

Storm Eunice caused a “red” weather warning for London on Friday. It was one of the strongest hurricanes in Europe since the “Great Storm” hit Britain and northern France in 1987. Scientists say the two storms were filled with “sting jets”, a rare meteorological event caused by an unusual confluence of pressure systems in the Atlantic Ocean that exacerbated Eunice.

The Met Office, the UK’s Meteorological Service, issued a mild “yellow” wind warning for the south coast of England and South Wales on Saturday, saying “Hurricane Eunice could hamper recovery efforts.”

Infrastructure damages from the storm could exceed 300 million pounds ($410m), according to the Association of British Insurers, based on repairs from previous storms.
