Renowned Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani’s funeral prayer was performed at the National Assembly ground in Islamabad, organized by the Kashmir Committee. 

According to reports, the funeral was attended by a number of notable personalities, such as President of Pakistan Arif Alvi, Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, Chairman Kashmir Committee, Hurriyat Conference Leaders and MPs. The prayer was performed by Hurriyat leader Ghulam Muhammad Safi.

Earlier, Pakistan strongly condemned the capture of Syed Ali Geelani’s body by Indian forces, which happened while his burial was being prepared. Indian forces broke into his house, harassed his family and stole the body.

State Department Spokesman said that according to the family, Syed Ali Geelani was to be buried in Srinagar’s Shahada cemetery but the administration did not let them. He went on to say that the Indian government is still afraid of him even after his death and that their attitude is a reflection of their brutality. India has violated all civil and human values in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

He further said that the Indian media is reporting the burial of Syed Ali Gilani and as well as imposing a curfew in the Valley. “The international community,” he said. “Should take strong note of the Indian government’s ill-treatment and hold it accountable for inhuman behavior.”

Former Prime Minister and Leader of opposition Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that he was deeply saddened by Syed Ali Geelani’s death.

He went on to say that Syed Ali Geelani, leader of the Freedom Movement of Kashmir, fought the Pakistani side in Kashmir all his life, and his courage and bravery against Indian atrocities will always inspire the war for Kashmir’s independence. “May Allah reward him with a high status paradise. The purpose of his struggle should be fulfilled soon,” he said. “He hoisted the flag of Pakistan in Kashmir, a reflection of his deep patriotism. He was a true Kashmiri and never bowed down to the opposition.”
