Taliban can be US partner for peace: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan stated that during the Doha peace process, the United States had established a working relationship with the Taliban and the Taliban could become a partner of the United States for peace.

In an interview with an American magazine, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that a peaceful Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan. The United States can also play a role in ending the Afghan crisis, he said, stating that Pakistan and the United States need to stop terrorism from the war-torn nation. “We must cooperate with Afghanistan to deal with the crisis,” he said.

He said there was direct cooperation between the US and the Taliban during the evacuation process, and that the US had established a working relationship with the Taliban during the Doha peace process. “The Taliban could be a US partner for peace. The US has voluntarily withdrawn and I do not think that the withdrawal will affect their international reputation,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that the United States can also play a positive role in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Afghanistan. “The United States can work with the new government in Afghanistan to promote common interests and stability in the region. Cooperation is needed between the United States and all major powers in the region,” he said.

The Prime Minister further added that Afghanistan was facing a humanitarian crisis due to the destruction caused by coronavirus and previous governments, adding that if China provided economic assistance to Afghanistan, Afghans would accept it. “The Taliban joined the CPEC and had relations with China,” he said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the banned TTP was responsible for thousands of terrorist attacks against Pakistan.
