Tensions Mount as Bangladesh Goes to Polls

In the lead-up to the 2024 elections in Bangladesh, at least 14 polling stations, including one on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, were set on fire, heightening concerns about the electoral process. A wave of attacks unfolded just a day before the commencement of voting, creating an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty. [Source: BBC NEWS]

Reports from local media indicate that a Buddhist temple in the southeastern city of Chittagong has been deliberately torched, while the Election Commission’s report highlights an attack on a local party office affiliated with the ruling Awami League. In response to these incidents, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) urged voters to boycott the polls. The Awami League promptly accused the BNP of attempting to disrupt the elections, attributing the crimes to them.
As the country braces for the elections, all eyes are on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sheikh, who is poised to secure a fifth term in office. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina acknowledged India’s support for Bangladesh and expressed gratitude, particularly referencing India’s assistance during the “Liberation War” in 1971.

However, concerns arise regarding the fairness of the electoral process. The BNP faces significant challenges due to the arrest of its members, and the Awami League strategically chose not to field candidates in certain constituencies, a move seemingly aimed at avoiding the formation of a one-party parliament. With opposition parties largely marginalized, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sheikh appears to have a clear path to victory.
The pivotal question emerges: can elections that lack a level playing field be considered fair? It is crucial to acknowledge that the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has faced accusations of widespread human rights abuses and a severe crackdown on the opposition. As the nation approaches the polls, concerns about the integrity of the electoral process persist, raising questions about the true democratic nature of the forthcoming elections.
