The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is often referred to as a platform for debate, but the reality is far from what the term suggests. Instead of debates, the UNGA is characterized by meticulously crafted speeches, addressing issues of utmost importance to each member state. While these speeches may spark a response from other nations, requested and expected granted. However, it is nothing close a true debate.

In 2023, the UNGA’s theme revolves around “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.” Two distinct viewpoints persist regarding the UNGA: one that views it as a vital platform for member states to bring forth issues close to their hearts, and the other that sees it as a stage for political theatrics, where speeches are often designed to cater to domestic audiences.

The latter perspective finds resonance in a tweet by Muneeb Qadir, Advocate of High Court, posted on September 23, 2023, at 11:42 AM: “Israel points out human rights violations in Iran & they’re 100% correct. Iran points out Israel’s human rights violations in Palestine & they’re 100% correct. Pakistan points out human rights violations in India & they’re 100% correct. India points out human rights violations in Pakistan & they’re 100% correct. However, all of them are 100% wrong in their own human rights violations assessments. In short, the UNGA is merely a political point scoring forum where Human Rights are used as a tool to malign one another, not treated as an ideal worth upholding within their own respective countries/territories which they control.”

To further emphasize this point, in 2022, the UNGA committed to supporting Pakistan in its efforts to recover from devastating floods and alleviate their ongoing impact. Unfortunately, the effects of the floods persist to this day, despite the UNGA’s adoption of a resolution and calls for extensive support from donor nations and institutions for Pakistan’s reconstruction and rehabilitation.

While there are side meetings and interactions at lower staff levels during the UNGA, the larger picture calls for a more focused and meaningful interactive dialogue among heads of state. It is imperative that the UNGA moves beyond grandiose speeches and political posturing, towards concrete actions that can address the pressing global issues outlined in its theme for 2023. Only through genuine cooperation and collaboration can the UNGA fulfill its mission of promoting peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all nations.
