“The Illiterate” | Baaghi TV

Most people in Pakistan have stopped reading & researching. Their awareness on issues is zilch. They either depend on forwarded info (read uneducated opinion) on WhatsApp groups or read those tacky blogs which puts reading time on top stating, ‘Reading time 2 minutes’, or slightly more. The Illiterate will jump into a discussion after reading headline of a newspaper, never mind the body text. The Illiterate will love arguing for arguments sake, particularly on subjects he is oblivious about!

Research is not part of their vocabulary. One can give the poor souls, the most well done, research-based fact, it will be thrown out of the window. Ignored at best. They will continue on their tangent, that sadly exposes their lack of awareness on the issue under discussion. [Using the plural form as there are so many of them out there in the wilderness of their egos].

It’s not just about political discussion. One finds most of such lot, who exist in massive numbers-quite ill-read in other areas too. Like poetry, literature, world history, fiction, philosophy and so on. Knowledge of one’s own subject is a different thing altogether. Reading is an experience that enriches lives, one learns of a world outside of the bubble we exist in. We learn to understand differences in ethnicity, gender, social class. These understandings lead to greater empathy. It leads to understanding a different point of view in real life. It helps, also, in the trajectory of the reader.

One can make out in less than 5, if one is engaging with a well-read person or an illiterate. Hope this term does not jar the egoistic sensitive nerves. Many a time a degree alone is not an indication or the benchmark of an educated mind.

Thanks for this wonderful piece, YAA, that’s a true reflection of half-read society! Though I am as illiterate as others are but even then I find myself unfit to bear with the nonsensical arguments for or against a leader of their respective parties. We love or hate our respective Deotas and Monsters beyond limits. Absolutely no rational n critical thinking!
