TikTok ‘never shared’ data with Chinese authorities: CEO

Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, reportedly informed US (United States) legislators that the video-sharing app has “never shared” data of its American users with the Beijing administration, amidst rising concerns the Chinese app would be banned in the country.
According to reports, in a written testimony shared by the House Committee on Tuesday, the Chew is set to testify in court on Thursday. Addressing the issue of a possible data leak, Chew said that the TikTok app has “never shared, or received a request to share, US user data with the Chinese government”. Chew added that the video-sharing app would not “honour such a request” if it were to be made.

In its report, Al Jazeera stated that Chew will be speaking before the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Thursday where he will be expected to elaborate on the concerns that the app was used for the manipulation of China’s ruling party. Last week, the company confirmed that it was being forced to cut ties with its Chinese owners if it wished to continue operating across the US.

The CEO further added that ByteDance which is the parent company of TikTok, has never been controlled by the Chinese government or any other “state entity”. According to Chew, the app is not an “agent of China or any other country”.

On the other hand, US legislators and other critics have said that the Chinese app poses a considerable risk to the privacy of US citizens and the country’s national security. Meanwhile, the company has stood firm that it has spent over $1.5 billion to push through its initiative known as “Project Texas” to safeguard the data of its US consumers.

Likewise, Beijing has placed blame on the Biden administration for the dissemination of “disinformation” and for “suppressing” TikTok. On Tuesday, Chew stated that over 150 million people use it in the United States alone, a mark that has gone up from 100 million in just two years. Furthering his argument, Chew said that the numbers show “almost half of the US” connecting through TikTok as they “create”, “share”, and “learn”.
