Tsunami Danger Looms Over Alaska After Earthquake

Authorities in the US state of Alaska have issued a tsunami warning following the recent earthquake of magnitude 8.2 in the region. Reports from the foreign news agency Reuters state that according to the geological survey done, the magnitude of the earthquake was 8.2. No property or loss of life has been reported so far. A tsunami alert siren has been installed near a Walmart store in Kodiak, Alaska. The US National Tsunami Center (NTWC) has issued an alert for Southern Alaska. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy said on social media site Twitter that the state’s Emergency Operations Central has been activated and authorities are contacting communities in tsunami-alert areas. The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the earthquake struck at 10:30 pm local time, at a depth of 35 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated it had canceled the tsunami alert for Hawaii and the US Pacific region of Guam. The NTWC further stated that it has been assessing tsunami risk levels in the Pacific coast of the United States and Canada.
