June 30, 2021: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on US President Joe Biden’s administration to lift or waive all sanctions on Iran under a 2015 deal to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
In a report to the UN Security Council, Guterres also called on the United States to “extend the waiver of oil trade with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and to renew the waiver for nuclear non-proliferation projects.”
The 15-member council will discuss on Tuesday the Secretary-General’s two-year report on the implementation of the 2015 resolution highlighting the nuclear deal between Iran, the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China.
Guterres’ appeal to Washington comes amid renegotiating the agreement – known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Former US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in 2018 and imposed tough sanctions, prompting Tehran to start violating some nuclear limits in 2019.
“I urge the United States to lift or waive the sanctions imposed on this plan,” he said, urging Iran to return to full implementation of the agreement. Iran has enriched uranium to about 60 to 60 percent, well above the treaty limit of 3.67 percent and closer to 90 percent suitable for a nuclear bomb cover, although it says it is only interested in civilian nuclear power. Is looking for and may soon reverse its moves if Washington lifted sanctions and returned to the 2015 agreement.
Guterres said: “I believe that a full resumption of this project is the best way to ensure that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program remains particularly peaceful.”
