Karachi August 28 (Online Int’l): United Business Group (UBG) Chief S M Muneer on Friday expressed concern over the devastation caused by torrential rains in Karachi.
He demanded of the Sindh government to start distribution of rations, tents and other essential items amongst the affected people on an emergency basis in the city. Muneer said that the city has been hit by the worst monsoon in its 90-year history that flooded the entire city. If the government had developed proper strategies to prevent damage from the already expected heavy rains, the situation would have been better. It would not have caused so much damage if the city had cleaned up the slums and eliminated the slums around the water drains.
Secretary General UBG, Zubair Tufail said that the federal and provincial governments should intensify the relief efforts by keeping politics away and providing food and other items to the victims and compensate the traders of their losses. He said that it was ironic that the city which generates huge revenue for the country is in a state of disarray. The business community is seeing the business set up after years of hard work being destroyed, he added The recent rains have cost the citizens and traders millions of rupees of losses.
Chairman Sindh Region UBG, Khalid Tawab and Central Spokesperson UBG, Gulzar Feroz said that there is no proper drainage system in the city due to which a little rain makes Karachi’s roads look like rivers. Political parties have left Karachi’s citizens destitute. The UBG leaders paid tribute to social organisations, Pakistan Army and Rangers Jawans for helping the citizens.
They demanded that a one-year relief package should be given to traders and industrialists of Karachi as the business community has already suffered huge losses owing to corona.
