UK considers military deployment amid rising “Russian hostility” in Ukraine

Jan 30, 2022: Britain is considering a major NATO deployment to bolster Europe’s borders amid growing “Russian hostility” against Ukraine after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops to the country’s border.

Britain has said any Russian intervention in Ukraine would be subject to immediate sanctions and would be “disastrous” for both sides.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson who is due to visit the region next week, and is also expected to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone said the move will send a ‘clear message’ to Putin as Russian troops mass at Ukraine border.

“This package would send a clear message to the Kremlin – we will not tolerate their destabilising activity, and we will always stand with our NATO allies in the face of Russian hostility,” Johnson said in a statement, adding, “I have ordered our Armed Forces to prepare to deploy across Europe next week, ensuring we are able to support our NATO allies.”

Johnson’s office said the offer could double the number of British troops in Eastern Europe and look at “defense weapons” sent to Estonia. There are currently about 1,150 British troops in the region.

Officials will finalize the details of the offer at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium this week, and ministers will discuss military options on Monday. The next day, the head of the armed forces will brief the British cabinet on the situation in Ukraine. Tensions have risen since Russian troops gathered on the border with Ukraine, and relations between Russia and the West have reached their lowest point since the end of the Cold War.

Meanwhile Russia has also sent more troops to the border with Belarus, located north of Ukraine, as it has stepped up demands for broader security guarantees, including that Ukraine should never be allowed to join NATO.

UK’s foreign and defense ministers will also travel to Moscow in the coming days for talks with their Russian counterparts, aimed at improving relations and easing tensions. Britain is expected to announce in Parliament on Monday that it will tighten its sanctions on Russia in order to target strategic and financial interests.

Since Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the escalation of separatist conflict in the east of the country, which has killed more than 13,000 people, Ukraine has rapidly turned to the west.
