Sept 23, 2021: In another acknowledgment of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s efforts to tackle the effects of climate change, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson highlighted Pakistan’s plan for 10 billion trees during his address to the United Nations.
Following the example of Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of the UK called for the planting of 10 billion trees and told world leaders that humanity must “grow up” and tackle climate change.
“I invite everyone to follow the example of Pakistan’s Imran Khan, who has pledged to plant 10 billion trees,” he said. The Billion Tree Project is recognized worldwide as a critical step towards reducing environmental damage.
In a speech to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Johnson said that now or never, if the world meets its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C from industrial pre-war era.
UK Prime Minister Johnson is set to host a major UN climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland in six weeks. He is using his visit to the UN headquarters in New York to put pressure on governments to set tougher emissions targets and give more money to poor countries to help clean up their economies.
Johnson reminded the world’s leaders to; pledge collectively to achieve carbon neutrality by the middle of the century, to step up and commit to very substantial carbon reductions by 2030, in particular with coal, cars, cash and tree, to end the use of coal power by 2040 and the developed world to do so by 2030.
He said every country should cut carbon use by 68% and highlighted why China must phase out use of domestic coal and said only zero-emission vehicles should be on sale across the world by 2040.
Summing up, UK’s PM Johnson urged the world to halt and reverse the loss of trees and biodiversity by 2030, look up to the example of Prime Minister Imran Khan in planting 10 billion trees, and finally he said governments must work with financial institutions – the IMF and the World Bank – to leverage trillions of dollars in the private sector to do right by the next generation.
