Ukraine attack: Pakistani students face difficulty in flying back home

Feb 25, 2022: Pakistani students residing in Ukraine have appealed to the government of Pakistan to help them leave the country.

After the attack by Russia, Pakistan has relocated the Pakistani embassy from Kiev to the city of Ternopil. There is a train service from Kharkiv to Ternopil in Ukraine. According to estimates, the number of students studying in and around Kharkov is about 300.

According to an appeal by the students, a large number of Pakistanis are stranded in Kyiv. Pakistani students are appealing to the Pakistani embassy for help. The Pakistani embassy did not make any arrangements to evacuate the students from Kyiv and the phone of the Pakistani embassy has been switched off since morning. The city of Kyiv is currently under night curfew, while other countries are working hard to evacuate their residents.

Meanwhile, the government is working to ensure the safe evacuation of all Pakistani nationals stranded in Ukraine, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ukraine Dr Noel Israel Khokhar said on Friday.

According to a statement issued in this regard, 1,500 Pakistanis, including 500 students, are residing in Ukraine and have been asked to relocate to safer regions, Radio Pakistan reported.

Taking to its official Twitter handle, Pakistan’s Embassy in Ukraine announced that Ukraine’s airspace is closed while the embassy is communicating with Pakistani students who were unable to leave earlier than advised. Earlier on Thursday, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ukraine Dr Noel Khokhar confirmed that overall 1,500 Pakistanis including 500 students are present in war-torn Ukraine and they are safe.

The father of two Pakistani students Tanveer Ahmed told the media that both of his sons are receiving education in the MBBS curriculum at Poltava University in Ukraine.

Ahmed revealed that 50 Pakistani students are also present at the Ukrainian university. The parents of the students complained that the Pakistani embassy was only giving statements instead of their children’s safe evacuation from the war zone.

They demanded the government to take immediate steps to bring back their children from Ukraine.

Meanwhile Ukraine said it had closed its airspace to civilian flights because of a “high risk” to safety, hours after a conflict zone monitor warned airlines should stop overflights over the risk of an unintended shootdown or cyber attack.

Russia has closed some airspace in the Rostov flight information region to the east of its border with Ukraine “in order to provide safety” for civil aviation flights, according to a notice to airmen.
