Ukraine: Central Kyiv rocked by two loud blasts
Feb 25, 2022: According to a report by AFP, two loud blasts were heard in central Kyiv early Friday, as Russian troops push closer to the Ukrainian capital in an invasion of its Western-backed neighbour.
The Ukrainian military says Russia fired on Kyiv’s urban areas, but Ukraine’s air defense system repulsed “two deadly gifts”, according to a post on its confirmed Facebook page. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said three people were injured, one in critical condition, after a “missile debris” hit a residential building.
He tweeted a picture showing a building with part of its wall collapsed and firefighters at the scene. Russian missiles and shelling rained down on Ukrainian cities on Thursday when President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale ground and air strike, forcing citizens to take refuge in the metro system.
Russia’s forces pressed deep into Ukraine as deadly battles reached the outskirts of Kyiv and the West responded with punishing sanctions.
Russian paratroopers have already wrested control of the Gostomel airfield, on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv, after swooping in with helicopters and jets from the direction of Belarus.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russian “sabotage groups” have entered Kyiv and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
