Jan 27, 2022: A Ukrainian National Guard soldier has opened fire on security guards at a military factory in central Ukraine, killing at least five people and wounding five others.

A statement said the incident took place early Thursday during the handing over of weapons to guards at the Pivdenmash missile factory in Dnipro.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said the assailant fired a Kalashnikov assault rifle and then fled the scene, adding that “five people were killed and five others were injured.” Police are searching for the fugitive. The incident occurred at 3:40 am (01:40 GMT), the ministry said, when the shooter was being given a weapon at the beginning of his shift.

“The motive for the crime is unknown,” they said, adding that Nikolai Ballen, a National Guard commander, had been dispatched to the scene. According to its website, the Yuzhmash facility is an aerospace factory that manufactures and tests materials related to defense, aeronautics and agriculture.

The attack comes at a critical time for Ukraine’s military. The Russian military is gathering troops near the country’s border with Ukraine, and NATO members have accused Russia of plotting to invade the country. Moscow, meanwhile, denies the allegations and is seeking security guarantees that NATO will halt its expansion into the former Soviet republic.

The United States and NATO have held several talks with Russian officials over the past few weeks, but talks so far have failed to resolve the crisis. Another round of talks is set to take place in Berlin, Germany, in two weeks.
