Dec 2, 2021: Authorities say police cordoned off the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, with a lone man apparently holding a gun outside the venue.

A UN spokesman told AFP news agency that “the UN headquarters is closed, and police are conducting operations there.”

The photos show armed police surrounding a man standing on the sidewalk with a gun in his hand. The man threatened to kill himself in front of an entrance to the building, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The road with the UN headquarters was closed to traffic, but meetings inside were not immediately affected.

“Due to a police investigation, avoid the area of 42 Street and 1st Avenue. Expect emergency vehicles in the surrounding area,” the New York police department said on Twitter.
