UN names top Pakistani cop as its police adviser

The United Nations named the Inspector General of Punjab Police Mr. Faisal Shahkar as its police adviser in the UN Department of Peace Operations (DPO) earlier on Monday. 

Faisal Shahkar has held numerous key positions and is amongst the top cops in Pakistan. He is succeeding Luis Carrilho of Portugal as the police adviser of the United Nations.

Appointed by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, Faisal Shahkar brings 30 years of national and international experience to the position, Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated on Monday.

Shahkar, who is the incumbent Inspector General of Punjab Police, has previously served as Additional Inspector General (AIG) as well as Regional Police Officer (RPO) in the Police Service of Pakistan.

IGP Punjab Mr. Faisal Shahkar has more than nine years of experience at the United Nations Headquarters and the field where he most recently served as team leader within the United Nations Standing Police Capacity (2020-2021).

Faisal Shahkar is an alumnus of University of London, United Kingdom where he did his master’s in law. He is also a master’s in political science from the University of Punjab in Lahore.
