US and Israel agree to develop Iron Dome System

Washington: Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Naftali Bennett and the United States (US) President Joe Biden agreed to develop an “Iron Dome” missile defense system over a telephone conversation. The US president also hinted to pay a visit to Israel later this year.

As per the sources of international news agencies, Biden and Bennett also discussed security issues in the Middle East, focusing on Syria, Afghanistan and Iran.

The two leaders were ambitious to build the “Iron Dome” missile capable of destroying missiles and iron shells from a distance of 4 to 70 kilometers. Bennett also thanked Biden for his support.

On Thursday, the House overwhelmingly approved $1 billion dollar fund for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. According to the sources, there was a heated debate amongst the Democrats over US policy towards Israel.

The vote was 420 to 9 to assist Israel replace missile interceptors used during heavy fighting in a devastating rocket and missile war with the Palestinians in May, resulting a in a widespread bipartisan support in Congress for Jerusalem that has continued for decades.

Those opposing the fund approval criticised the government to aid a country that has abused human rights while others were astonished over their colleagues’ refusal to help protect the civilians of Israel.

It has also been reported that the two leaders also discussed important regional issues, including the resumption of diplomatic relations and barter with the Gulf countries. Last year, four Arab countries including United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain restored diplomatic and trade relations with Israel under the U.S. mediation.

It should also be noted that Israel receives $3.8 billion funding from the United States every year, codified through a 10-year old memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Barrack Obama back in 2016. Of that, 500 million goes to missile defense annually.
