Sept 23, 2021: The head of a special committee of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday introduced legislation to provide Israel with $1 billion to replenish its “Iron Dome” missile defense system, a day after funding from a larger spending bill was removed due to “technical grounds”.

Some very liberal US House Democrats objected to the clause, saying they would vote against the broader spending bill. That jeopardized its passage as Republicans lined up against a plan to fund the federal government and increase the nation’s debt ceiling until December 3.

The ouster called for Republicans to label Democrats as anti-Israel, despite a long tradition in the US Congress of bipartisan support for the Jewish state, for which Washington sends billions of dollars in aid each year.

The United States has already provided more than $1.6 billion in aid to Israel to build and build the Iron Dome system, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service last year.

Some Liberal Democrats have expressed concerns about US-Israeli policy this year, citing, among other things, the large number of Palestinian casualties, saying Israel responded to Hamas rocket attacks in May. Israel says most of the 4,350 rockets fired from Gaza during the conflict were detected and blown down thanks to the Iron Dome interceptors.

The bill, introduced Wednesday by House representative Rosa de Lauro, provides  $1 billion to replace the missile interceptors used during the conflict.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday evening that he would bring the Iron Dome Bill to the House this weekend.
