Philippines tells China to ‘back off’ after South China Sea clash

Oct 8, 2021: According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, around 20 special operations and conventional forces from the US has been conducting trainings for Taiwan’s forces for less than a year, with some of the trainers rotating.

The report if these trainings comes amid China’s rising verbal threats against the island ally of the United States.

On their own part, the Taiwanese Defence Ministry declined to comment on the report, but Pentagon spokesman John Supple said that generally speaking, US support for Taiwan’s military is gauged on its defence needs.

In Supple’s words, “Our support for and defence relationship with Taiwan remains aligned against the current threat posed by the People´s Republic of China, we urge Beijing to honor its commitment to the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait differences.”

On the recent hike in tensions with China, Taiwan’s Premier Su Tseng-chang said, “We are making every effort to defend our national sovereignty and our people as well as maintaining regional peace. We are doing all we can and we appreciate like-minded countries working together,” he said a “just cause” always attracts support.

Taiwan’s media reported the involvement by the US in training local forces last November but those reports were denied by the officials in Taiwan and the US.

It is however, a long established fact that the US supplies weapons to Taiwan, including defense and fighter jet missiles, since it is an ally against China in the hotly contested Indo-pacific region.

The US also has a vague commitment to defending Taiwan, which Beijing considers a rebellious province.

A video released last year and Taiwanese media showed U.S. troops taking part in an exercise on the island called “Balance Tamper.”

On the other hand, Chinese forces have stepped up their activities toward Taiwan in the past year, conducting sea assault exercises and flying large sorties of bombers and fighters close to Taiwan airspace.

According to Taiwan’s defence minister military tensions between the island and China are at their highest in four decades, warning that even “slight carelessness” or “miscalculation” could spark a crisis, going so far as to say that Beijing would be in a position to launch a full-scale invasion in four years.

Meanwhile, US state department spokesperson, Ned Price says increased military activity by China is provocative and the US urges China to stop diplomatic, military and economic pressure on Taiwan.

When asked if the US is prepared to take military action to defend Taiwan, the National security advisor, Jake Sullivan said, “Let me just say this, we are going to take action now to try to prevent that day from ever coming to pass.”
