US-Iran, eighth round of talks in Vienna

The eighth round of talks has started in Vienna, regarding Iran’s nuclear deal. According to reports, Iran plans to stay as long as it takes to reach an agreement.

According to reports, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian the Irani Foreign Minister has said that he wants the coming round talks to focus on verifying if US sanctions have been lifted. He said that Tehran needs to reach a point where it can sell its oil “without restrictions” so the money can be transferred into “foreign currency to Iran’s bank accounts”.

According to reports, former US President Donald Trump lifted US sanctions on Iran following a deal in 2015 that would allow the US control of Iran’s civilian nuclear program.

The Iranian Foreign Minister said that the negotiations are focused on joining two draft texts. According to The Guardian, the first draft covers the nature of the sanctions related to the nuclear deal meanwhile, the second draft is focused on steps Iran must reverse to come back into compliance with the deal including reducing its nuclear stockpile.

Earlier in February, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the Supreme Leader of Iran said that the sanctions should be lifted not just on paper but also in practice. Moreover, Iran is concerned that the western companies will not want to invest in Iran for fear that US sanctions may be reimposed. It is pertinent to note that President Trump pulled out of the deal in 2018.

In addition to this, Iran’s atomic energy authority has ensured that it will not “seek to enrich uranium” over sixty percent. The pledge came a day before the eighth round of talks.
