Sept 24, 2021: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Joe Biden, the White House has refused to include India in a new security alliance comprising the United States, Britain and Australia.

The Indian prime minister is in Washington this week to attend the first private meeting of the Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or so-called “quad” group. The US, Japan, India and Australia are part of this alliance that was designed to counter China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Asked whether countries like India and Japan would be part of a new security alliance to address challenges in the 21st century strategic Indo-Pacific region, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki responded in the negative saying there was no one else who was going to be a part of the AUKUS security alliance.

“The announcement of AUKUS last week was not meant to be an indication, and I think this is the message the president also sent to (French President Emmanuel) Macron, that there is no one else who will be involved in security in the Indo-Pacific,” Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference on Wednesday, according to international media reports.

Last week, on September 15, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson jointly announced the formation of the tripartite security alliance AUKUS. The tripartite security alliance is being seen as an attempt to compete with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

Under the new security partnership, Australia will receive a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines for the first time. The AUKUS alliance will allow the US and Britain to build Australia’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
