Jan 4, 2021: More than 1 million new COVID-19 cases have been reported in a single day in the United States, setting a serious new world record, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

According to the tracking group, 1,082,549 new cases were reported in the United States on Monday after the long New Year’s weekend.

The number of cases reported on Monday is usually higher than on other days because of weekend tailing delays, especially after a three-day holiday weekend. However, the figures reported on January 3 are double the number of daily cases compared to the previous Monday. The university reported that the rolling average of new cases during the seven days, which experts consider more reliable, was 501,205 new cases daily till Tuesday morning.

The new data comes after Dr Anthony Faucci, a senior adviser to the US epidemic, said the country was experiencing an “almost vertical increase” in coronavirus cases. The peak can only be weeks apart, he said. According to government modeling, in the week ending December 25, the Omicron variant, the most transferable ever, accounted for about 59% of all U.S. cases.

Faucci said the South African experiment – where tensions were first detected in late November and peaked sharply, then receded almost as fast – offered some hope.

The number of deaths and hospital admissions in the United States has been lower than in previous weeks. More than 36,400 people have died of COVID-19 in the last 28 days in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins data released Tuesday. More than 6.9 million new cases were recorded in the country during this period.

US officials have struggled to find a balance that would protect public health without severely damaging the economy or criticizing key services such as policing and air travel. The CDC last week halved the isolation period for asymptomatic cases to 5 days.

Sixty-three percent of the country’s population is fully vaccinated according to Johns Hopkins data.
