US spy satellite successfully launched into orbit atop reusable SpaceX rocket

Feb 3, 2022: According to a report by the AFP, a US intelligence agency announced on Wednesday that its newest spy satellite was successfully launched into orbit atop a reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The SpaceX Falcon 9 took off at 12:27 pm local time from the Vandenberg Air Force base in California, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which is in charge of the US Space Force, said in a statement.
In a statement after the release of the spy satellite called the NROL-87, the NRO said the rocket had landed back safely on the base.
The statement further said, “NROL-87 is designed, built, and operated by the NRO to support its overhead reconnaissance mission.”
Refraining to provide details about the spy satellite, the NRO did say the NROL-87 it would “provide a wide range of timely intelligence information.” The NRO, a division of the U.S. Department of Defense, operates a large network of surveillance satellites, and is headquartered near Washington in Northern Virginia.
The NROL-87, the first satellite launched by NRO in 2022, is the third time the agency has used the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
