On Sunday, the US State Department classified the arrest of former Prime Minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan as an internal matter for Pakistan. The department’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law in Pakistan, echoing their stance on promoting these values globally.
Imran Khan, in response to previous accusations of the US being involved in a plot to overthrow his government, has hired lobby firms in America to improve his party’s image. Despite US lawmakers calling on the Biden administration to urge Pakistan to respect human rights and halt the crackdown on the PTI after the May 9 vandalism incident, they have not issued any statements regarding Imran Khan’s recent arrest.
Previously, Senator Bob Menendez, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee expressed concerns about the treatment of PTI leaders, workers, and supporters following their arrests. However, they have remained silent on Imran Khan’s arrest thus far.
