US troop reinforcements for NATO allies arrive in Romania along Ukraine border

Feb 8, 2022: According to a Reuters report, the first US troops to strengthen NATO allies on the East Bank have arrived in Romania after the Russian military build-up on the Ukrainian border, Defense Minister Vasile Dincu said on Tuesday.

The US is sending about 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania to protect Eastern Europe from a possible spill over from the Ukraine crisis. The Pentagon says it will move a striker squadron of about 1,000 U.S. troops from the German city of Vilseck to Romania. The arrival of troops in Poland began on Saturday. Dincu told reporters that the first 100 US troops were handling logistics in Romania.

The US currently has about 900 troops in the country, a member of NATO since 2004 and hosting a ballistic missile defense system, some are part of the NATO force and some are under separate bilateral arrangements. France says it also plans to send troops to Romania and has offered to lead a future NATO mission, which will include about 1,000 troops from various countries.

A decision could be made at the next meeting of NATO member defense ministers in mid-February. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday that NATO was considering a long-term military position to strengthen its defenses in Eastern Europe. Troops from the coalition are rotating in and out of Eastern Europe.
